Parents can start to teach computer skills to their young children by supervising them in short sessions. Internet safety is a concern, but there are plenty of safe Web sites where families can find learning resources. Interactive, online play is a great way to build skills in both computer use and fundamental subjects. Using the mouse can help develop young children's hand-eye coordination. Many sites and educational programs can help kids with pre-reading skills such as letter and number recognition, while Web games can introduce memory skills and spatial concepts like "over" and "under." Be sure to monitor the sites you and your child visit for content, and remember the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no screen time for children younger than 2 years old.
