It’s hot outside! The sun is blazing, and the beach, pools and the lakes are calling your (and your kids’) names. Here are some tips to help you and your family enjoy the remaining days of summer while staying comfortable and safe.

Water Safety
Always remember that safety comes first around waterways, pools and beaches. An unfortunate accident can happen in mere seconds.

  • Children at play in or near the pool or water must be supervised at all times.
  • Small children should always wear some type of flotation device such as water wings or a life jacket while in the water.
  • An adult should be at arms length from the child at all times while in the water.
  • Youth swimming lessons are available all year round at your local recreation centers. It’s always a good thing to prepare your child to be safe in the water by having them learn how to swim.

Fun in the Sun
Always remember to keep sunscreen handy and reapply liberally throughout the time that you are outside at play.

  • Children who take certain medications are more sensitive to sun than others. Be sure to check the information labels and additional instructions on your child’s medications to be prepared to adjust your activities accordingly to reduce medical side effects.
  • Stay hydrated, when engaging in outdoor activities for any length of time you can never have enough water to keep you refreshed.
  • Avoid or limit sugary juices and juice boxes when participating in outdoor activities.
  • Play in the shade!!! Never underestimate the value of a good umbrella or tent to protect you from the sun. Direct sunlight is most damaging, so put up a shade or umbrella to block some of the rays. This will allow you to enjoy being outside longer.
