Sensible Seafood
An easy way to teach your child to be environmentally and health conscious is by making sensible seafood selections. The Virginia Aquarium has taken an active role in promoting sustainable seafood choices through a new program called Sensible Seafood.
The goal of the Sensible Seafood program is to promote seafood choices that make sense for a healthy marine environment. The Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center joined forces with the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch program, which has already conducted extensive research and analyses in this area. The local aquarium uses the information they obtain from Monterey Bay to create local Sensible Seafood pocket guides and education materials.
The Sensible Seafood pocket guides reflect what is sold in the mid-Atlantic regional market. Next time you’re out shopping for seafood, make “sensible” choices.
Restaurant partners are also encouraged to include the Sensible Seafood symbol and message on their menus and in other point-of-purchase materials. In addition, the program promotes seafood species that are grown or harvested from Virginia and the mid-Atlantic region.
The Sensible Seafood pocket guide is updated annually based on the most recent information from Monterey Bay Aquarium.
