Are you expecting? Maybe you’re a new mom or dad to tiny bundle of joy.

Having your first baby is an extraordinary life experience – one that can be joyous, as well as complicated. First time parents have a long, yet rewarding road ahead and here a few tips to help you along the way.

  • Get a good, reliable car seat. One made especially for newborns should do the trick. You can't bring your new baby home from the hospital without it. You'll need a car seat designed just for newborns.
  • Prepare your baby's bed. All babies need a comfortable spot to sleep. You'll want to make sure that your baby’s bed is nearby.
  • Stock up on diapers – cloth or disposable – and formula and feeding supplies.  You’ll have to feed your newborn about 12 times a day, and consequently, change him/her the same amount.
  • A bottle brush is also a must have for new parents. Use the brush and hot, soapy water to clean your bottles.
  • Stock up on onesies. They’re the most comfortable for newborns.
  • Learn how to swaddle. Lay receiving blanket. Lay the baby on it. Fold the bottom up over baby's feet. Bring in one side and gently tuck it under, next to baby's side. Wrap the other side around the other way. Swaddling helps your baby feel as though he/she is still in the womb.
  • Babies cry. Be prepared. There’s usually a reason for a newborn crying. They may be hungry, even wet. Sometimes, they just want to be held.
  • Make sure to burp your baby, especially after they drink or eat. Newborns should be gently patted on the back and propped up against your shoulder. Make sure to have a burp cloth handy because babies often spit up.
  • Cherish your little bundle of joy. Yes, you may feel overwhelmed at times. That’s natural. Make sure to take time to cuddle with your newborn.
  • Parenting is a learning experience. You’ll learn new things as you go. Make sure to take time for yourself along the way.
