A Park for Every “Body”
Everybody loves a playground – especially one that borders the beach. How about a playground that everyBODY can use? That’s what Grommet Island Beach Park is all about. It’s the first 100 percent handicap accessible oceanfront park in America, which allows anyone and everyone to enjoy the Virginia Beach oceanfront. The park accommodates children and adults with disabilities. They can race across a bridge, dig in the sand, and explore the playground with ease.
Located at 2nd Street and the boardwalk, parking is just a short distance away at Rudee Loop and on the side streets between Pacific and Atlantic avenues. Metered parking is free at Rudee Loop from 5 a.m. to 10 a.m. each morning and meters are only $1.25 per hour.
Handicap accessible ramps from the boardwalk to the beach are available at every block, and handicap accessible restrooms are located at 17th, 24th, and 30th streets. Visitors can use an all-terrain wheelchair for free at the 17th and 24th street rental locations. For more information, about the park, visit www.grommetisland.org.
